The Old Spice Guy as Luke Cage!

You know that Old Spice guy is getting pretty serious about wanting to be a movie star.  Earlier in the year I blogged about Mr. Isiah Mustafa wanting to play the Luke Cage character and even went as far as to be involved in a Marvel spoof which you can watch right here.  Well he has done it again and teamed up with a group of nerds and created a pretty cool looking fan trailer of him reprising the role of Cage again.  I thought what was just as cool is another video of the actual making of the short fan trailer.  You can check them both out below.

*Update #1: I guess the video has been removed by Isiah himself.  I would think I would want everyone to see it and get jacked up about it but I guess that isn't happening.  If I find it somewhere else online I will post a new link.  The behind the scenes video still works.  Stay tuned....

First Fright Night Clip!

MTV released a short clip for the new film Fright Night!  Looks pretty cool and I think that Colin Farrel is going to be a great vampire.

Mechamania Review: The Hangover Part 2

The wait is finally over.  The smash hit film The Hangover garnered itself a sequel in The Hangover Part 2 that was released this past Memorial Day weekend.  I think the first film caught everyone by surprise of how good and funny it actually was.  A lot of us have been to Vegas and know how crazy it can possibly get which in the first film took crazy in Vegas to a whole other level.  That and the fact that it was starring pretty much unknown actors that hadn't hit super stardom quite yet.  Of course now pretty much everyone that starred in the original is a major movie star but the big question is....can they pull it off again?  Does this film bring anything original to the story?  Are we in for the same story in a different locale?  Is the comedic juices and chemistry between the cast replicated again to bring us a whole other barrel of laughs and not a complete waste of our money?

I will try and keep this review as spoiler free as possible but to be completely up front about this film.  If you have seen the first film then you have seen this film already.  I will get to that later so let's get on with the story.

We find Stu (Ed Helms) getting married to a Thai bride in her home country of Thailand.  Phil (Bradley Cooper), Doug (Justin Bartha) and Alan ( Zach Galafianakis) are all along for the trip to be in Stu's wedding.  Also along is Stu's fiance's little brother Teddy played by Mason Lee.  After a quiet night on a quaint Thai beach drinking a couple of beers we find Phil, Doug and Alan hung over yet again in a strange hotel room somewhere in Bangkok Thailand with no memory of what happened earlier.  Doug left earlier and is still with the wedding party but Teddy is no where to be found.  You guessed it.  Teddy took the role of Doug and the guys race through Bangkok trying to find Teddy in time to bring him back so Stu can get married and everyone can live happily ever after.  The end.  Like I said earlier.  If you saw the first film then you have this film pretty much figured out already.

This film was directed by Todd Phillips who also directed the first.  This film is funny.  It has funny parts in it.  I should say it has more raunchier and gross parts in it.  What happened to slapstick suggestive comedy in films and not sick nudity to make people laugh?  Don't get me wrong.  I laughed along with everyone else because it was funny but it makes you wonder sometimes where our sense of humor has gone.  The acting was great.  Everyone was the same from the first film including Mr. Chow played by Ken Jeung.  All of the wives accompany the boys to Thailand all played by the same actresses in the first film and their is even a small cameo by Jeffrey Tambor again as Alan's dad.  As you can guess the heart of the film is wrapped around Alan and his half retarded and just plain stupid childish behavior.  Stu isn't far behind as the "everyday man" who has a "demon" inside of him that rares it's ugly head every time he is wasted.  Phil is the eye candy and well Doug is just kinda there and not really in the movie that much at all.

So let's get down to the nitty gritty of this thing.  It is an utter and complete practically frame by frame remake of the first film.  I said earlier that it is funny and it is.  It has a lot of funny parts in it but frankly I am almost insulted that they brought nothing new to the table.  As I said earlier.  If you saw the first then you know what is going to happen in this one.  Same formula exactly.  Perhaps that doesn't matter for the general audience.  I can't keep but thinking that someone along the line made thousands or if not millions to write this movie when it is completely ripped off from it's predecessor.  Let's do the exact same thing as the first but put it in a foreign country.  I guess I am going over board saying it is frame for frame remake.  It does have some changes but more or less sticks to the original.  Mike Tyson is back but instead of actually integrating him into the film somehow he shows up for a shotty cameo at the end.

Early predictions is around $130 Million for this film over the past weekend.  That is a definite blockbuster and I have already read quotes from the director for a third and final film.  Please change it.  Change up the formula.  Do something different.  I can't be the only one that feels this way.  If your looking for a good laugh then this film is for you.  I wouldn't suggest anything but an early showing and perhaps a couple of shots of Jack Daniels before hand.  If your looking for an exciting sequel with twists and turns and actually adding to the Hangover series then look somewhere else because it's not here!

I'm really swaying about the 3 out of 4 rating but keeping it for now.  My wife said it deserved one but it wasn't that bad!

Cool Ghostbusters 2 behind the scene video!

I came across a cool article over at Spook Central concerning the character of Vigo The Carpathian from Ghostbusters part 2. From what the article states is that there was a big stink from the actor Wilhelm von Homburg and his voice being removed from the footage and replaced by famed actor Max von Sydow.  Spook Central has the video of the original scene that was filmed with Homburg's voice and then the final audio from the movie.

When Homburg saw the final cut it is reported he stormed out of the theater upset. Apparently he knew nothing of the voice change before that point. I would be mad too!

Take Shelter Trailer!

I don't know much about this film other than it star's Michael Shannon as a father who either has some weird power to see the future or is a complete nut ball. The film is currently running on the festival circuit and early reviews are very positive. If you get the chance to see it let me know because I am dying to watch it!

50/50 Trailer and Poster!

Here is your first look at the new film 50/50 starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen.  This film is about 2 friends. One that has been recently diagnosed with Cancer and has a 50/50 odds of living or dieing.  This film looks pretty funny and has an all-star cast including Bryce Howard and Angelica Huston.  Is it just me or does it look like Seth Rogen has pretty much put back on all of his weight that he lost for The Green Hornet?  Maybe he is depressed because of how bad that movie sucked!  I kid, I kid Seth.  I have heard pretty much positive reviews of this film even though it deals with dark subject matter.  Please, not another Funny People movie.  You can watch the trailer below but I think they kinda spoil the whole movie in the opening shot by Seth Rogen. Joe Levitt is the man!  He just seems to get better and better with every film he is in!

2 new Muppet Movie Trailers!

So who in the world doesn't love the Muppets?  Personally, as a small child, I grew up with the Muppets.  Their original creator Jim Henson was a genius and thankfully his family have been able to take his amazing creations and continue them long after Jim's death for the rest of the world to enjoy over and over.  If you ever watched the film Forgetting Sarah Marshall you would have seen Jason Segel create and use puppets similar to Muppets.  Well I guess in reality Jason is a big Muppet guy and even co-wrote this new film and also stars in it.  Amy Adams also stars and so do all of your favorite Muppets and even a couple of new ones from the look of the trailers.  What is your favorite Muppet movie? Every Christmas it is a family tradition in my household to watch A Muppet Christmas Carol.  A classic and a must for the holidays!

This nex trailer is a Muppet spoof of the Hangover Part 2 trailer.  Awesome!

Old School Review: The Hangover by K-D Van!

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. In the classic 2009 comedy film, the Hangover, that is exactly how four best buddies pray their trip will be- one crazy night of outrageous shenanigans before they head back home with memories of “the night that never happened.”  Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned.

The movie starts out with average guy Doug Billings (Justin Bartha) and his fiancĂ©, Tracy Garner (Sasha Baresse) amidst the last minute planning of what will be their beautiful and ceremoniously perfect wedding. Its two days before the big day and Doug has planned a trip to Vegas as a bachelor party of sorts for that very night. He of course invited his two best friends, socially awkward, aptly nicknamed Stu “Dr.faggot” Price (Ed Helms) and pretty boy Phil Wenneck (Bradley Cooper), but also his new brother in law to be, Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis). Together they leave in Tracy’s father’s favorite car, a silver 1969 Mercedes-Benz cabriolet, at his suggestion, not at all prepared for the night of their lives.

As you might suppose from this movie’s title, they all wake up with a raging hangover. Their hotel room is thrashed, Alan is half-naked, Stu’s missing a tooth, Phil’s wearing a hospital bracelet around his wrist, there’s a tiger in the bathroom and Doug is missing in action. The best part? They remember nothing. Together, they must retrace their steps and search for clues that might not only tell them what happened, but tell them where Doug might be.

In all honesty, the film was pretty darn hilarious. Galifianakis’ character Alan, especially, was great. His character was some sort of crazy, yet innocent eccentric goofball dork. In the scene before they wake up hung over, they are all four standing on the hotel rooftop preparing to drink some shots before hitting up some casinos. In this scene, Alan reveals that he had prepared a speech for the occasion, and continues to read to them an emotional sentiment where Alan refers to himself as “a one man wolf pack,” then continues to say that since these people have entered his life, his pack has grown by three. The awkwardness on the faces of the other characters was absolutely priceless.

I was impressed with the other characters as well. The audience can easily identify with them and their unique nuances made the film enjoyable from beginning to end. Helms’ character, Stu, is somewhat of a geeky prep, if possible. You know the kind. The sort of guy in films that’s usually teased as a homosexual? Same happens here. In one of the scenes, I distinctly remember him wearing a sweater tied around his neck, like a cape, the way guys in movies are depicted when they’re supposedly really sophisticated and what not. In the beginning of the film, the audience watches him have a conversation with his girlfriend. Its obvious she’s a control freak and wants nothing more than for him to do whatever she says whenever she says and for whatever reason she gives, while she goes around doing whatever. He doesn’t even tell her they’re going to Vegas, but that instead he’s going to somewhere he described as a “quaint” wine country for a quiet relaxing evening.

This dishonesty sets up one more layer of difficulties between the guys and their struggle to fix the damage done during their stay, due to the fact that she calls relentlessly and assumes the worst when Stu lets the her calls go to voicemail.

Cooper’s character, Phil, involves the guys in plenty of trouble. Despite having a wife and child back home, Phil is convinced his life as a middle school teacher is the worst thing that could have ever happened to a guy. Determined to have the most fun he possibly can while he’s away, he tends to lead the others somewhat astray before they’ve even arrived in Vegas. In fact, it was he who shouted at Stu at the most inopportune moment during which Stu was explaining to his ward that his friends were really quite mature once you’ve gotten to know them. Precisely at that moment a monumental summoning from the front of his house referred to Stu as “Dr. Faggot”- a clever play on the fact that Stu will tell anyone who listens that he’s a doctor, when really he’s just a dentist. Phil is also seen in the opening scenes of the film collecting money from his students for a filed trip to a “planetarium” of some sort. Teacher of the year? Hardly. Somehow he manages to use his charisma to cheat extra money out of students for his own personal “Vegas” trip fund.

The appearances of other great characters, such as part-time stripper Melissa (Michelle Graham), psychotic Asian mafia man Mr.Chow (Ken Jeong), and Mike Tyson in the flesh, really kept this film interesting and entertaining. Overall, the film was an all around awesome, funny movie. I highly recommend it to those who love funny stuff; adults, and probably young adults as well. I mean, anyone who’s anyone has already seen this flick pretty much, right? If not-- watch it! I insist! If you’re looking for laughs, you will not be disappointed.
